The Philanderess

The Philanderess, by Sophia Fabiilli and directed by Michelle Alexander premiered at the 2015 Toronto Fringe Festival.

The play is a 60min feminist farce inspired by George Bernard Shaw’s The Philanderer. The Philanderess sold-out its run, was awarded The Second City Award for Outstanding New Comedy, and was remounted on The Second City Main Stage in the fall of 2015.

Synopsis: Meet Charlotte. She has her PhD in feminist philosophy, she just asked her lawyer boyfriend to be her life partner, and she authors a wildly famous blog about sleeping with men on the side. This fabulous feminist has it all. Until one of her lovers crashes her life partner engagement party… with his eccentric family in tow.

NNNNN“Sophia Fabiilli brilliantly adapts George Bernard Shaw’s play for the 21st century… A comical, feisty, and at times smoldering bedroom farce.” (NOW Magazine)

Feature interview with Richard Ouzounian (Toronto Star)

“Sophia Fabiilli’s, The Philanderess, a farcical adaptation of a Shaw classic (and her first play), enchanted audiences.” (Torontoist)

  • The Second City Award for Outstanding New Comedy
  • Outstanding New Play, Outstanding Production, Outstanding Ensemble, and Outstanding Direction (NOW)
  • Patron’s Pick Award and sold out run

The Philanderess is wonderful. It keeps the original themes of Shaw’s play intact, merging them with a modern setting and very nice, fast-paced, bawdy wit that works. Fabiilli’s script is something to be proud of, never giving the audience’s attention a chance to lapse as funny things keep happening.” (Mooney on Theatre)
